New Technology could make the Internet 100 times faster

June 30th, 2010 No comments

A group of MIT researchers are developing a new network topology that could make the Internet 100 times or even 1000 times faster. The new technology is called flow switching. In the current network technology, backhaul internet links carries information in the form of optical signals. These are then converted into electrical signals and are stored in the routers memory for a short period of time (generally milliseconds) to help the router to take routing decision. These electrical signals are then converted back to optical signals for re-transmission. This process consumes more time and energy.

In the new technology called flow switching, the conversion from optical to electrical and then back to optical is avoided. One of the advantages of using optical signals for transmission is that different optical signals loaded with different information can travel over the same fiber. But it becomes difficult  when optical signals coming from different directions reach a router simultaneously. Converting these optical signals to electrical signals allows the router to keep them in memory until it can get to them. The wait is just a matter of milliseconds, but there’s no cost-effective way to hold an optical signal still for even milliseconds. In flow switching, dedicated path is utilized thus eliminating the need of storing the information. Optical signals arrives only in one direction and send them off only in one direction.

Once fully implemented, this technology could make the Internet 100 times or even 1000 times faster.
